Gold nanoparticles enrich everyday products

Durable paint, water purification, more quickly computers, tougher shoe soles, and lighter and less costly televisions are all possibilities now that the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) scientist has discovered a choice to disperse gold nanoparticles evenly through plastic. Adrian Fuchs, from QUT’s university of bodily and substance Sciences, said the approach he acquired created was a design for dispersing metals in nanoparticle form through polymers or plastic materials.

“The properties of metals transform once they may be in nano form and thus mixing the exclusive property of nanoparticles with plastic results in some total new range of composite supplies that could be place into use for novel catalysts, drug delivery, and coatings,” Dr Fuchs said.

“Paint is basically a plastic so when gold nanoparticles are added it creates colours additional intense throughout the total noticeable spectrum. The paint would be also additional durable when exposed to some severe environment.”

Dr Fuchs said gold acquired fantastic conductivity and became a useful catalyst when mixed with distinct metals.

“If you place gold nanoparticles with titanium dioxide using a plastic mould, it is possible to produce a very efficient catalyst to purify water; the titania absorbs the gentle and converts it into power which can be then passed into the conductive gold,” he said.

Dr Fuchs said his method for dispersing nanoparticles through plastic could be also used to encapsulating drugs into plastic casings to ensure they could be ingested and place into use for tumor detection and destruction.
